Статья посвящена представителям великогерцогского Ольденбургского дома, связавшим свою жизнь и деятельность с Россией. Рассматривается роль наиболее ярких ее представителей, прежде всего принцев Петра Георгиевича и Александра Петровича Ольденбургских в формировании народного образования Российской империи, создании и совершенствовании отечественных образовательных учреждений. Анализируется деятельность созданных ими учебных заведений в советское и настоящее время.

PRINCES OF OLDENBURG AND EDUCATION IN RUSSIA

In the pre-revolutionary period, keeping and development of the Russian education and upbringing carried out only by charity. However, the study of the history of philanthropy in the education sector has become possible in Russia only since the late 20th century. Meanwhile, both normative and institutional aspects of this activity should be investigated and systematized. Experience and activity of individual philanthropists is also important for modern managerial and humanitarian practices in education.

The subjects of my study is the role of the most prominent philanthropists among representatives of Grand Ducal House of Oldenburg (Princes Peter Georgievich and Alexander Petrovich of Oldenburg and their wives) in the formation of public education in the Russian Empire, in the creation and improvement of Russian educational institutions. For this purpose I use legal and historical analysis (of Russian Emperors’ decrees and rescripts on management of education), as well as general methodological research approaches (deductive and inductive, with respect to sources for the history of Russian branch of the princes of Oldenburg). Thus, my article is a brief overview of the management (government) activities of two generations of princes of Oldenburg in Russian Empire in the field of secondary general and secondary specialized education, as well as public assistance.

In my article, I show that the main merit of princes of Oldenburg is the development of women's education and vocational training in Russia, primarily pedagogical, engineering and technical and medical ones. In fact, we can talk about two most important social components of this charity and its results:

(i) overcoming estate approach in education: the involvement of representatives of various social strata and groups in the educational process contributed to their socialization and reduced the number of declassed and marginalized elements in Russian society;

(ii) training of qualified personnel for all branches and units of the economy, which was extremely important for the success of industrial revolution in Russia in the late 19th — early 20th сс.

My concluding is follow: activities of princes of Oldenburg as the House of Romanoff’s immediate family shows the leading role of state charity in the field of education and upbringing in Russia.
